How the numbers are calculated
We take annual or periodic figures from sources like the WHO, FBI, UN, and DataReportal and convert them into a per-second rate. Your browser then multiplies that rate by the time that has passed since midnight or since January 1st. The underlying rates are fixed until a newer study is published, at which point they get updated manually. For the full calculation logic and source list, see the methodology page.

Are the numbers real or estimated?
They're modelled from real, cited data, not guesses. A published yearly or industry total gets converted into a steady rate, and every figure links back to the original source so you can check it.
How often do the counters update?
The totals recalculate constantly based on the underlying rate. The rates themselves come from the newest research we could find, and we revise them whenever better data is published.
